Why do we replace missing teeth with a partial or bridge?
Your opposing existing teeth need to hit the replacement of the missing teeth. If not, those existing teeth will move either into the space of their missing neighbor or down if they do not have a friend to meet them.
Why is it so important to have an opposing bite? Your teeth are already compromised with either trauma or disease that caused the missing tooth to be extracted (pulled), the rest of your existing will need full attention to keep them from becoming diseased.
Having teeth that are unstable will cause further damage and eventual extraction. It’s very important to maintain the pressure of chewing to retain the firm foundation which is your bone.
The bone that is not being used will atrophy (waste away) in time. The picture of the old granny and her misshapen mouth is the perfect example of a mouth with atrophy. It is so important to maintain homeostasis, keeping a perfect balance in your mouth.
A full denture is replacing all your missing teeth with a full plate of teeth. The process of making both the partial and full denture is the same. Impressions are taken and our talented laboratory creates the acrylic plates to match the anatomy of your mouth.
