What causes sleep apnea?
So many factors come into play when we deal with habits, diets, and drugs and is a real problem sometimes caused by your own brain. There’s a couple of types of Sleep Apnea. The first is Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) where you have a physical obstruction that closes your airway. Your tongue, tonsils, adenoids, a tumor or swelling due to allergies, are the most common obstructers for this condition. We need to remove what is closing your airway by getting it out of the way. Just tilting your head will open your airway. Just like in CPR, we tilt the head and neck to get the airway open and our body can do its thing by breathing. Of course, if you need to remove our tonsils or any other tissue, your medical team will be able to take care of that situation. If that solves the problem, you are good to go. Get some rest.
There’s also another condition called Central Sleep Apnea which is a bit more complicated. Your brain fails to let your body know that it’s time to breathe. This can happen several to hundreds of time per hour. You stop breathing and then you wake up gasping for air. There are times when you are not even aware that you wake up gasping. It’s a very dangerous situation when you fail to breathe. What triggers this condition? We don’t know but we can have tests run to try to understand your condition and come up with solutions to give you peace of mind.
